About UsOur group started a few years ago Friends of the Martinsville Schoolhouse. This schoolhouse, now owned by the Lower Windsor Township, is the small stone structure which stands to the left of the new municipal building. It built in the 1870’s and served as the center of learning for the students of the Martinsville area until 1954 when the local schools were consolidated. It has stood in a state of benign neglect since it was closed.
The original plan was to set up a non-profit group directed toward preservation and maintenance of the schoolhouse with the goal of using it eventually as a center for collecting information about the area's one- and two-room schoolhouses, about their graduates and teachers, and the roles of these people in the development of the community.
During preparation for incorporation as a non-profit organization, it became clear that creating a more broadly-based group would be a better choice; therefore, in 2007 we incorporated as The Lower Windsor Area Historical Society. Mission StatementThe mission of the Lower Windsor Area Historical Society is to collect, preserve, identify, and perpetuate the historical and cultural foundations of our area. This shall include the records of early settlers and families, schools, churches, businesses and other institutions. Our mission is also to arouse in the friends and citizens of the area an interest in its history; to encourage the love of local history in the youth of the region; to publish and disseminate historical information; and to encourage the preservation of historical sites and structures. |
